Spooktacular Kid-Friendly Halloween Family Movies!

Halloween is that great time of year when the weather starts to become cooler, leaves are shimmering with color, and the country embraces a touch of spookiness. It’s also the perfect season to get your loved ones together for some fun Halloween family movies. Cozy up with each other with a fuzzy blanket, a big bowl of popcorn and snacks, and a range of classic Halloween family movies and create an unforgettable evening filled with laughter, scares, and family togetherness.

Setting the Scene:  Decorating for Halloween

Before you dive into your Halloween family movies, set the mood by decorating your living room. Place jack-o’-lanterns on the coffee table, light some eerie flameless candles, and hang a few paper skeletons on the wall. Dim the lights and maybe even cover the lampshades with a sheer fabric or scarf.  The setting should be just spooky enough to add a thrill without overwhelming the younger kiddos. Don’t know where to start. We found some great buys on Amazon. Here are just a few of our favorites. #AD

Snacks and Treats:  Pumpkin Spice and More

No movie night can be a success without delicious snacks. For a Halloween twist, try making some homemade pumpkin spice popcorn, caramel apples, or Mummy-themed hot dogs.  Don’t forget to treat yourself to a nice hot pumpkin spice latte for the ultimate Halloween movie night! Need more some great treat ideas no worries we have you covered. Come check out our Pinterest board filled with Halloween theme food.

Movie selections – Something for All Ages

We have come up with a list of all the kid Halloween themes that you can stream this weekend on Disney +. This list was so much fun to make with my 8-year-old daughter. We had a blast and it was fun to share with her which movies I watched as a kid her age.

  • “Girl vs. Monster”  – (TV-PG) A teen accidentally releases a dangerous monster that she and her friends must capture before the monster can get revenge on her parents.
  • “Halloweentown” (All of them) –  (TV-PG) A young girl realizes she is in a family of witches and must help save her grandmother save Halloween town from evil.
  • “The Haunted Mansion (2003)” (TV-PG) A realtor with his wife and children stop by a mansion on their way out of town, only to learn it is haunted.
  • “Mom’s got a date with a vampire”  (TV-PG) 2 kids, who are grounded, set their mom up on a date to get her out of the house for a night, only to find out the man is a vampire.
  • “The Nightmare Before Christmas”  (TV-PG) A unique blend of Halloween and Christmas that’s fun for all ages
  • “Twitches”  (TV-PG) Twin girls, separated at birth, are reunited and discover they have magical powers.
  • “Hocus Pocus” (I & II)  (TV-PG) Family favorites that combine comedy and magic
  • “Frankenweenie” (TV-PG)  A boy and dog story with a monster twist. Victor brings his dog back to life after being hit by a car but this time Sparky likes to wreak havoc.
  • “Spooky Buddies” – (TV-G) The puppies are back and this time go on a spooky adventure through mysterious haunted mansions.
  •  “Zombies” – (TV-G) A fun musical where the zombie football player falls in love with the human cheerleader.
  •  “Invisible Sister” – (TV-G) Two sisters, one is popular while the other isn’t. A science project going wrong makes the popular sister go invisible.
  •  “Muppets Haunted Mansion” – (TV-PG) Gonzo has been challenged to spend Halloween night in a haunted mansion.

Feel free to adjust the movie selection to match the age and preferences of your family.  Have fun sharing your favorite childhood movies as you make a list with your kids.

One thing that we have started with our family movie nights is to let the kids invite some friends and share the fun with them. When the kids see movie night on the calendar they are always so excited and start thinking of who they want to invite this time. When the weather is nice we love having movie night outside spreading blankets on the ground or the trampoline. This weekend we are hoping to sneak in one more movie night outside with a fire pit before it gets too snowy in Colorado.

Remember, the most important part of your Halloween family movie night is the time spent together.  Whether it’s fun you have together decorating, preparing snacks, or sharing a few screams, laughs, or popcorn, these moments will create memories that last a lifetime.  So find some cozy blankets, prepare your favorite snack, and get ready for a spooktacular movie night as a family!
