Creating a Thankful Tree: A Heartwarming Thanksgiving Tradition

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the things we are grateful for. One meaningful way my husband and I have done this with our Grandchildren is to create a “Thankful Tree.”  I use a tree with lights on it but you can also make this a craft project that you can use as a beautiful centerpiece for your Thanksgiving celebration.  This project will encourage a spirit of gratitude among your family and friends. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of making your very own Thankful Tree, a cherished symbol of appreciation and togetherness.

If you plan on using a tree with lights on it, here is a link to our Benable list that shows a few different trees.

If you choose make this a family craft project, below are the materials and steps to create you own Thankful Tree.

Materials You’ll Need:

Before we dive into the steps, gather the following materials:

  1. Branches: You can use real branches from your yard or purchase artificial ones from a craft store.
  2. A sturdy container or vase: Choose one that complements your décor and accommodates the size of your branches.
  3. Stones or floral foam to stabilize the branches.
  4. Craft paper: In autumn colors like red, orange, and brown.
  5. Scissors and hole punch.
  6. Twine or string.
  7. Markers or pens.
  8. Decorative items: Optional, but you can use glitter, small artificial leaves, or other embellishments to  make your tree extra special.

Step 1: Prepare Your Branches

If you’re using real branches, ensure they are clean and dry. Trim them to the desired height for your arrangement. If you’re using artificial branches, there’s no need for trimming. Place the branches in your container securely, using stones or floral foam to stabilize them.

Step 2: Cut and Decorate Your Leaves

Cut out leaf shapes from the craft paper in various sizes. You can use our template from our free printable or freehand it for a more natural look. You could also trace your kids hands and use them as the leaves on the tree.  Encourage creativity by allowing each family member to decorate their own leaves with thankful messages, drawings, or even quotes. Write the things you’re grateful for, like family, friends, health, or simple pleasures.

Step 3: Punch Holes and Attach Leaves

Using a hole punch, create a hole at the top of each leaf. Cut a piece of twine or string, thread it through the hole, and tie it to the branches. Arrange the leaves like the foliage on a tree, making sure to leave enough space for more as Thanksgiving approaches.

Step 4: Decorating the Base

To add a festive touch to your Thankful Tree, you can decorate the vase or base with small decorative items. Glitter, artificial leaves, or even painted rocks can make your tree more visually appealing.

Step 5: Encourage Gratitude

As Thanksgiving draws near, encourage your family and guests to add their thankful leaves to the tree. You can even make it a daily tradition leading up to the holiday, allowing everyone to express their gratitude in different ways.

In a world often filled with challenges, the Thankful Tree stands as a symbol of hope, growth, and gratitude. It serves as a daily reminder to focus on the positive aspects of life and encourages a mindset of thankfulness. The Thankful Tree is a simple yet powerful practice that can cultivate a culture of gratitude and enrich the lives of those who embrace it. So, why not give it a try and watch as your Thankful Tree blossoms with expressions of gratitude, turning a simple idea into a flourishing symbol of appreciation.
