As we kick off day 4 of 12 days of Christmas cookies, what better way to celebrate than with a classic treat full of joy and warmth of this special time? Get ready as we share our favorite sugar cookie recipe. These versatile delights not only serve as a canvas for your culinary creativity but also bring a touch of nostalgia to every bite.

When I think of sugar cookies there is only one recipe that I can think of sharing. And that recipe is my mom’s of course. She would say that it’s just a recipe that she found on Pinterest. But I have to say I love the way her sugar cookies always turn out. They are my favorite. When we were preparing this blog series I was so excited to see her sugar cookies on the list.

Tips for this recipe:

  • This recipe works best with stand up mixers using the paddle attachment. It can be done with handheld mixers but just know it will take more kneading by hand during step 6 in the recipe.
  • If all you have on hand is salted butter that’s ok to use just skip the salt added into the recipe.
  • If you want a more crispy cookie around the edges? Simply add 1-2 minutes onto the cooking time!

These sugar cookies will work perfect as an easy gift to give this Christmas. Looking for more DIY gift ideas we have a blog post of 5 easy DIY gifts that are awesome check them out.

Total Time 41 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter room temperature
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside
  • In a new bowl using a mixer cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes
  • Add the egg and vanilla and beat another minute or so.
  • Slowly add in the flour mixture
  • Blend until all of the flour is well incorporated. The mixture will look crumbly at first but just keep blending until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  • Remove about half of the dough from the bowl and knead by hand just a bit to form a smooth ball. Roll out dough on a lightly floured work surface.
  • Cut out cookies into desired shapes.
  • Place entire baking sheet of unbaked cookies into the freezer for 5 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 °F
  • Bake cookies in preheated oven for 9-11 minutes, depending on how thick your cookies are.
  • The cookies are done when no longer are shinny on top, but they will not show much of change in color.
  • Cool on baking sheet for a 1-2 minutes before moving to a cooling rack. Allow to cool completely before decorating.
