Dice Games to Play At Your Next Game Night

Dice Games to Keep Your Family Entertained this weekend!

When the winter chill keeps you indoors, there’s no better time to gather the family around for some cozy fun. Dice games are a simple yet entertaining way to bring everyone together, from kids to grandparents. With just a pair of dice and a little competitive spirit, you can create unforgettable memories without stepping out into the cold. In this post, we’re sharing three exciting dice games that are perfect for staying warm and having fun at home this winter. So, grab your dice and let the good times roll!

3 of our favorite games to play as a family:

  1. Pig
  2. Stuck In The Mud
  3. Threes Away

Pig

What you need:

  • 1 6-sided die
  • Paper and Pen for keeping score
  • 2 or more players

Objective: To be the first player to reach 100 points

How to Play:

  • Youngest player goes first.
  • The first player rolls the die. If they roll a 2,3,4,5 or 6 they write down the score. If the player didn’t roll a 1 they can decide to roll again. If they roll again rolls 2,3,4,5 or 6 add that number to their previous score. If they roll a 1 they earn no score and immediately pass the die to the next player.
  • When a player doesn’t roll a 1 they can decide to continue rolling and add the points from each roll to their score for that turn. Or they can hold their points and pass the die to the next player.
  • But if that player rolls a 1 they lose all their points (that turn only) and must pass to the next player.
  • Play continues till a player reaches the score of 100.

Tip: keeping each turn in tally marks make it easier to keep score.

Stuck in mud dice game:

Stuck in the mud is a game that sounds complicated at first but is really simple once you play a round.

What you need:

  • 5 dice
  • Pen and paper for keeping score

How to play:

  • To start, one player rolls all 5 dice. When a 2 or 5 is rolled these are stuck in the mud and moved aside. The score for the roll is 0. The rest of the dice are rolled again. If there are no 2s or 5s all dice are added up. Then those dice are rolled again. On the other hand, if there are any 2s or 5s rolled those dice are set aside and the score remains at zero.
  • Play continues until all dice show either a 2 or 5. Dice rolls with no 2s or 5s are scored and added to that player’s turn score. When all the dice are stuck in the mud, then that player’s score for that turn is added to their overall score.

Example:

  • Roll one: 1,3,5,1,3 score: 0
  • Roll two: 3,1,4,6 score: 14
  • Roll three: 1,6,3,1 score: 11+14=25
  • Roll four: 2,2,5,2 score: 0

How to win:

The first player to reach 500 points is the winner!

Dice Game

Threes Away Dice Game:

Threes Away is a dice game where your goal is to end up with the lowest score possible. You roll five dice and you really want to see threes because each three counts as zero points. Lower the score the better.

What you need:

  • 5 6-sided dice
  • Pen and paper for keeping score
  • 2+ players (bigger the crowd the better)

How to play:

  • Decide who goes first and determine how many rounds you will have. We like to have 3-5 rounds.
  • Player starts the round by rolling all five dice at once. The goal is to get the lowest score possible. This is where 3s are your friend because they are worth zero points.
  • After the initial roll the player must keep at least one die, but you can keep more if you want. If there are any 3s you have to keep those, too.

Example: if the first roll is 3,4,2,6 and 3 you will keep the two threes

  • Then the player will reroll the remaining dice, again keeping at least one die per roll. They continue this process until all the dice have been kept.
  • Once all the dice are kept, the player adds up The values of the kept dice, excluding any threes, to get their score for the round.

Score Example: 3,3,1,2 and 3 player score: 1+2= 3 points for the round

  • Next pass the dice clockwise to the next player.
  • The round continues until each player has a turn rolling the dice and recording their score.
  • Next round player B will start and keep switching to the next player till you play each round you determined.

Winner: The player with the lowest total score across all rounds is the threes away champion.
