Did you know that the tradition of carving pumpkins for Halloween, also known as ‘jack-o’-lanterns,’ has its roots in Irish folklore? The practice originally began with carving turnips and potatoes to ward off evil spirits. When Irish immigrants brought the tradition to North America, they discovered that pumpkins, with their larger size and easier-to-carve flesh, were the perfect canvas for their spooky creations. And so, the iconic pumpkin carving we know today was born, turning ordinary gourds into grinning, glowing works of art and gourd-geous creations!
Say goodbye to sore hands while carving pumpkins this season. We have found a kit you don’t want to miss out on to help create those glowing works of art! When we found this kit on Amazon we knew we wanted to try it with the kids. Let’s be honest, after a while it’s us moms doing all the hard work to finish and we end up with our hands feeling like they will fall off.
Start by creating the design that you want. There’s no wrong way, just let those imagination juices flow. It was fun to watch the kids’ ideas come to life as they were picking out which cutters they wanted for their pumpkin face to have.
Now that you have your design ready it’s time to prep those pumpkins. Cut your pumpkin on the bottom so it holds up better and longer. Our pumpkins lasted over a week outside before they started to look sad doing this trick. Another thing that we found out is during the cleaning-out process you will want to scrape out a little more than normal. You will thank us when you’re hammering the cutters in later. If you’re a pumpkin seed lover save those seeds and try this yummy recipe.
Finally, the pumpkins are ready to start carving away to get those gourd-geous creations. We started with the eyes but feel free to start with the month. Just remember to measure your layout before you start. You don’t want to waste a pumpkin. Or better yet you don’t want any mini meltdowns happening to ruin the fun. One thing that we did learn for the younger ones is you will want to start hammering in the cutters and let them finish. Or you can be brave and hold the cutter while they hammer. As you can see, that was my husband’s job. I didn’t need my fingers smashed during this process.
What I loved about this kit was the color-changing tea lights that it came with. They make the final project look so festive outside. I was sure I was going to need two lights per pumpkin…nope, one light is all I needed to complete this project!
Grab your carving tools, embrace the joy of Halloween, and carve your way to a gourd-geous celebration. Share your glowing gourd-geous creations creations, and inspire others to join in the fun on Facebook community.
