Local Spotlight: Labor Day Lift Off 2024

Labor Day lift off is coming to Colorado Springs this week!

Colorado Springs is set to come alive this Labor Day weekend with the annual Labor Day Lift Off—a vibrant celebration that has become a cherished tradition for my family every Labor day weekend. If you’re local and need something to do check out the Colorado Springs lift off.

With free admission, families can enjoy a day filled with fun, excitement, and awe as the sky fills with colorful hot air balloons. Whether you’re an early riser eager to catch the morning balloon launch or looking to enjoy the evening glow, this event offers something magical for everyone.

Lift off: Morning race-

I’m sad to say this is an event I haven’t seen much of. One year we caught the end and last year it was so windy that the balloons were grounded. I’m hoping we can see the race this year. I hear it’s amazing and fun. The balloon teams race to take off, then they have to touch their basket in the lake nearby then they head south. For the mornings you can choose to watch from the park or walk just a little more to the lake.

Lift off: Night Time Glow:

I love the night glow! Let’s just say I’m not a morning person for the lift. But in reality I truly love walking around and seeing all the balloons glow at night.

Tip- If it’s windy they won’t put up the balloons. They still have the glow with the candle burners which is still cool, just not the same.

Come prepared:

This is a walking event so wear comfy shoes. You can find a spot and chill out with camping chairs but most people just walk around.

Even though the event is free, parking in parking lots costs anywhere from $10-$20. There is some street parking for free that fills up fast.

Can you bring in your own food? Yes we do every year. There are food trucks in the event if you don’t want to bring your own food. I have to say the funnel cakes in the trucks are amazing! My son always loves getting Hawaiian shaved ice.
