Spring Cleaning with Kids: Get Them Involved!

Spring cleaning is here! Let’s get the kids involved and helping with their rooms!

Do you ever feel like your kid’s room is in a constant state of chaos? No matter how often you try to tidy it up? I get it—between toys, clothes, and school supplies, it can feel like an endless battle. But what if I told you that spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a solo mission? With a few simple tricks, you can get your kids involved in decluttering and organizing their space. Not just for spring, but all year long! Here are some easy, kid-friendly ways to make cleaning fun, effective, and stress-free that my family has been using lately.

Spring cleaning tip #1: Stop Being overwhelmed by it all

Don’t let the chaos of your kid’s room overwhelm you! A simple strategy I use with my kids is to focus on just one area at a time. We tackle one section the room at a time. Then we either move on to the next or take a short break before continuing. This approach has been helpful for my 9-year-old. This allows me to guide her on what needs attention while still giving her the independence to clean on her own. Breaking it down this way makes the process feel more manageable and way less stressful for both of us!

This method has also been a game-changer when I’m helping my 4 year old clean up or sort through the overwhelming number of toys taking over our space. Instead of tackling everything at once, I focus on just one bucket at a time. I let her know, “We’re going through this bin, and we need to decide—do I still play with this, or is it time to give it to someone else?” Keeping it simple and manageable helps her stay engaged, makes the process less stressful, and teaches her the importance of letting go of things we no longer need.

One way that we have found to be helpful at decluttering and not feeling overwhelmed by the task is using the box method. This was something I saw another mom using on Tik Tok.

Spring cleaning tip #2: Box method

Box Method—a simple and stress-free way to tackle the mess. And has become a favorite in our household. I grab an empty box (diaper boxes and Amazon boxes work perfectly) and give each of my older kids one, along with a specific area in their room to focus on. As they sort, they decide what to keep, donate, or give away by placing unwanted items in the box. We often post items in our neighborhood Facebook group for free, making it easier to pass things along to someone who needs them or load them up and drop them off at Arc.

This method empowers my kids to make their own decluttering choices, teaching them how to let go of things without feeling overwhelmed. It turns cleaning into a manageable task rather than an exhausting chore!

Tip #3: Keeping track of what your kids are wearing.

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to tackle the closets—not just in your kids’ rooms, but yours too! Start by clearing out anything that doesn’t fit anymore or has holes. Once you’ve sorted through everything, put the remaining clothes back on hangers but hang them backward. As you go about your daily routine, you’ll naturally turn the hangers the right way when you wear something. By May, take a look—anything still hanging backward hasn’t been worn and is ready to be donated. It’s a simple way to declutter and make space for what you actually use!

Tip #4: Finding organization

Finding the right organization for your room can be challenging, especially with so many ideas available that don’t always work for your specific space. We’ve experimented with countless storage solutions, and while some seemed great in theory, they didn’t fit our needs as well as we had hoped. However, through trial and error, we’ve found a few organization methods that have worked perfectly for my kids’ rooms and play areas. These solutions maximize space, keep things tidy, and make it easier for my kids to find and put away their toys.

Spring Cleaning

When it comes to puzzles I have searched for something for a long time. Last Summer I saw this idea and had to try it. I love these plastic zipper bags. I love that they fit the board and the pieces in one spot less chances of losing pieces. They are easy to store in a basket in any room plus easy to take on the go to Grandma’s house.

Does your little one have stuffed animals taking over their room? I know ours did until we finally got a stuffed animal net! It’s the perfect solution to keep them off the floor while still being easily accessible for the kids. Now, their favorite plushies are neatly stored but always within reach when they want to grab one to play or snuggle with.

One storage solution I’m really wanting to try is the clear drawers from Target for Barbie dolls and all the tiny accessories that come with them. These drawers seem perfect for keeping everything organized while still being easy to see and access. They’d also work great for Legos, toy cars, or any of the other little collectibles my kids love. I can’t wait to give them a try and finally get all those small pieces under control!
