Outdoor Scavenger Hunt for Kids and Families

Outdoor scavenger hunts are one of the easiest ways to get kids outside and actually excited about itno screens, no complaints, just pure summer energy put to good use. Whether you’re hoping to keep them happily occupied while you sip your morning coffee on the deck, or you’re looking for something you can all enjoy together, a scavenger hunt hits that perfect balance of fun and fresh air.

There’s something about turning the outdoors into a game that instantly sparks curiosity and adventure. Kids start noticing things they’d normally walk right past—colorful leaves, tiny insects, interesting rocks and suddenly your backyard or local park becomes a world of discovery.

To make things simple, we’ve put together three different scavenger hunt ideas you can try this summer. Each one offers a slightly different twist, so whether your kids love exploring, solving clues, or a little friendly competition, there’s something here for everyone. Check them out below and get ready for some outdoor fun!

Outdoor scavenger hunt

Our first scavenger hunt is a picture clue version. Which is perfect for the littlest explorers to enjoy all on their own. Instead of reading words, kids can follow along using simple, visual clues, making it an easy and confidence-boosting activity for early learners. It’s amazing how quickly they get into it, eagerly searching for each item and feeling proud with every find.

This is one of my favorites to print out and laminate, so we can reuse it again and again all summer long. Just hand them a dry-erase marker or let them point out each item as they go, and you’ve got a fun, low-prep activity ready anytime you need it.

What am I?

“What Am I?” is a fun riddle-based outdoor scavenger hunt that’s perfect for older kids who are ready for a bit more of a challenge. Instead of simple pictures or lists, this version uses clever clues and riddles to lead them from one item to the next, keeping their minds just as engaged as their feet.

Kids will love solving each riddle and racing to figure out what (or where) it’s pointing to next. It adds an extra layer of excitement and a little friendly competition, whether they’re playing solo or in teams. Plus, it’s a great way to sneak in some critical thinking while they’re busy having fun outside.

Outdoor Scavenger Hunt:

Our final scavenger hunt is an outdoor challenge featuring a longer list of items. This one is perfect for older kids or as a fun activity for the whole family to enjoy together. With more to find and a bit more of a challenge, it keeps everyone engaged and exploring longer.

Have a competitive crew? Turn it into a race and see who can check off every item first! It’s a great way to get everyone moving, laughing, and maybe even a little strategic. This is another favorite to print and laminate, so you can bring it out again and again for easy, repeat summer fun.
