Tis the Season for Spritz: Christmas Baking

Time to break out the sprinkles and start making some spritz cookies! These have become a favorite in our house. I decided this year to give them a try and finally make some. Yep let’s just say that that bag of cookies didn’t last long with my family.

What is a Spritz Cookie?

Spritz cookies is a type of buttery, pressed cookie that is known for its distinctive shape and rich flavor. The name “Spritz” comes from the German word “spritzen,” meaning to squirt or spray, which refers to the traditional method of forming these cookies by pushing the dough through a cookie press.

Key characteristics of Spritz cookies include:

  1. Butter-based Dough: Spritz cookies are made with a rich dough that typically includes butter, sugar, flour, and often vanilla extract. The high butter content gives them a tender and melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  2. Use of Cookie Press: The dough is typically loaded into a cookie press, a device with different disc attachments that shape the dough as it’s pressed out. This allows for a variety of shapes, such as swirls, stars, and Christmas trees.
  3. Decorative Touches: Spritz cookies are often adorned with decorative elements like colored sugar, sprinkles, or even a cherry or nut on top. These additions not only enhance the visual appeal but also add a bit of sweetness and texture. This is where I let the kids help and they love it!
  4. Holiday Tradition: While Spritz cookies can be enjoyed year-round, they are especially popular during the holiday season. Many people use them as part of their Christmas cookie assortments, creating festive shapes and decorating them in holiday colors.
  5. Versatility: Beyond traditional holiday shapes, Spritz cookies can be adapted for various occasions and themes. The versatility of the cookie press allows for creativity in shaping and decorating.

Before we get started baking some yummy cookies. There is one tip that I wanted to share. And that is you want to make sure to use cold cookie sheets when pressing cookies. This will help the dough stick to the tray. Before I started prepping the dough I put the cookie trays in the refrigerator to get cool.

Finally let’s get to baking! Let us know are you a plain cookie lover or sprinkle lover
